Lots of “Snow” in Vegas…

Last week my Dad, Mom, and two little brothers drove out to Vegas to spend the some time with us. Isaac, my older brother, had to stay in Texas to work. It was great to see them all, and we had a heck of a time. However, we were all exhausted by the end of the week. (It was supposed to be somewhat of a restful week for all of us, but ended up being TONS of fun/not very restful) It is the first time we have had our family out to Vegas other than when my little bro Samuel helped us move, and when Morgan’s mom Leslie came right after we moved. It was so refreshing to be with them. This is a shout out to my fam…

There are too many great pics, so I had to narrow it WAY down. To see a bunch more CLICK HERE if you have Facebook. For now:

A friend of mine from back in Texas has been working on a wonderful personal reflection tool in his “spare time”. He actually just launched it this past Monday, and I wanted to share it with you all because I truly believe it will be powerful in some of your lives. It may not be for everyone, but it is certainly worth a try; if you spend  much time on a computer at all you should definitely create an account, and go through some “examens”.

This tool allows you to take more intentional steps in your personal worship time with the Lord in many different/interactive ways. I don’t know about you guys, but I stopped journaling with a pen and paper years ago. Typically, I journal on a Word document while trying to flip through the scriptures, look at Bible Gateway, all while jotting down notes and prayer points. Examen.me allows you to do all of this right on your computer, and stores everything on the server. You have the ability to be guided through different scripture/prayer/journaling “examens”, and led towards real life application. I would encourage everyone to go create an account, try out a few examens, and see what you think. I would also love to hear any feedback that you may have. My buddy Brent would cherish any feedback as well.

I’ve been a bit absent from the blog this week due to my mom, dad, and two little brothers being in town. I took the week off from teaching, and other work to spend some good quality time with them. I should be back in full swing this next week with some fun stories from this past week…

Beloved…

Not trying to be lame, and post other people’s stuff; Derek Webb is just so legit. I’ve listened to him for years, but the words to his songs are coming alive more and more as I listen lately. This song is called “Beloved”, and is another one of Derek’s “letters to the church”… (He is NOT writing this to a form, model, or institution. He is directing this at the people of God who make up His Church-keep that in mind as you read or listen)

“Beloved” – By Derek Webb

beloved these are dangerous times
because you are weightless like a leaf from the vine
and the wind has blown you all over town
because there is nothing holding you to the ground

so now you would rather be
a slave again than free from the law

(chorus)
beloved listen to me
don’t believe all that you see
and don’t you ever let anyone tell you
that there’s anything that you need
but ME

beloved these are perilous days
when your culture is so set in it’s ways
that you will listen to salesmen and thieves
preaching other than the truth you’ve received

because they are telling lies
for they cannot circumcise your hearts

(chorus)

beloved listen to me
don’t believe all that you see
and don’t you ever let anyone tell you
that there’s anything that you need
but ME

beloved there is nothing more
no more blessings and no more rewards
than the treasure of my body and blood
given freely to all daughters and sons

Again, Derek is speaking of unecessary things added, and ways we have been decieved. What do you think? What truths do you see here?

What’s The REASON?

A few days ago I posted lyrics to a Derek Webb song titled, “A New Law”. I hope you read them, and let them sink in. If not, I encourage you to click the above link, skip the stuff I wrote, and READ the lyrics. Or, just go listen to it. At the end I gave some examples about how as Christians we tend to slap new rules and regulations on things for the sake of ease, but miss the root issue in the process. We do things in an attempt to protect, or shield others from potential evils while sometimes killing the good in those things. (I have friends who got married several years ago, but had trouble with their sex life. They’d been taught their entire lives about the evils of sex, but never about the beauties when done “properly”) Here are two other examples I used in the last post:

“It is easier for me to tell my kids not to say curse words (give them a new law), than it is for me to teach them over time how to have love in their hearts instead of anger. It is easier for me to tell every young person I meet not to drink, and that it’s a sin (To “protect” them from it’s potential evils) than it is for me to teach them the truth about moderation & drunkenness. You get the point…”

What are some other things you can think of that we do as believers that miss the point? What are some ways we create “new laws” when it’s unnecessary? How has this negatively affected how the lost world around us views Christians, and The Church?

Just Give Me “A New Law”…

20061017-dwebb-coverI want to share the lyrics to this song with you all. They speak very powerfully for themselves, but I want to preface for you why I feel that these words are important for us as believers. This song was written in 2005 by one of my favorite songwriters, Derek Webb. I believe his music to be Prophetic words for the church in many parts of the world, but particularly in the West. This song speaks loudly to us as “leaders” in how we are to (Or NOT to) “equip the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body”. The thing that sticks out to me the most, which Derek points out is how we typically do what is easiest and most convenient at the time in terms of how we lead others. I’ll shut up now, and let you read the song.

“A New Law” – by Derek Webb – 2005
(vs. 1)
don’t teach me about politics and government
just tell me who to vote for
don’t teach me about truth and beauty
just label my music

don’t teach me how to live like a free man
just give me a new law

(pre-chorus)
i don’t wanna know if the answers aren’t easy
so just bring it down from the mountain to me

(chorus)
i want a new law
i want a new law
gimme that new law

(vs. 2)
don’t teach me about moderation and liberty
i prefer a shot of grape juice

don’t teach me about loving my enemies

don’t teach me how to listen to the Spirit
just give me a new law

(pre-chorus)
i don’t wanna know if the answers aren’t easy
so just bring it down from the mountain to me

(chorus)
i want a new law
i want a new law
gimme that new law

(bridge)
what’s the use in trading a law you can never keep
for one you can that cannot get you anything
do not be afraid
do not be afraid
do not be afraid

It is easier for me to tell my kids not to say curse words (give them a new law), than it is for me to teach them over time how to have love in their hearts instead of anger. It is easier for me to tell every young person I meet not to drink, and that it’s a sin than it is for me to teach them the truth about moderation & drunkenness. You get the point…what are some more examples you can think of?

I encourage you to click the link above to listen to the song. Derek has many more songs that are truly challenging for how we live our lives as believers. They often peirce my heart, and bring conviction. However, they always push me to pursue change, and seek the Spirit for how to be more effective for the kingdom as a follower of Christ.
