Not trying to be lame, and post other people’s stuff; Derek Webb is just so legit. I’ve listened to him for years, but the words to his songs are coming alive more and more as I listen lately. This song is called “Beloved”, and is another one of Derek’s “letters to the church”… (He is NOT writing this to a form, model, or institution. He is directing this at the people of God who make up His Church-keep that in mind as you read or listen)

“Beloved” – By Derek Webb

beloved these are dangerous times
because you are weightless like a leaf from the vine
and the wind has blown you all over town
because there is nothing holding you to the ground

so now you would rather be
a slave again than free from the law

beloved listen to me
don’t believe all that you see
and don’t you ever let anyone tell you
that there’s anything that you need
but ME

beloved these are perilous days
when your culture is so set in it’s ways
that you will listen to salesmen and thieves
preaching other than the truth you’ve received

because they are telling lies
for they cannot circumcise your hearts

beloved listen to me
don’t believe all that you see
and don’t you ever let anyone tell you
that there’s anything that you need
but ME

beloved there is nothing more
no more blessings and no more rewards
than the treasure of my body and blood
given freely to all daughters and sons

Again, Derek is speaking of unecessary things added, and ways we have been decieved. What do you think? What truths do you see here?

  1. i have loved this song for a long time.

how quickly we settle into thinking that this is it.
this is the life we’re supposed to live. And yes, sometimes it’s exciting, but mostly, overall it’s just blah.
Then Christ blows through the doors of our hearts (often times those who’ve believed that they were living the life He intended) and He breathes a fresh, mysterious, dangerous, risky life into our lungs. One that breeds a deep and messy love, one that breeds purpose in our very core. And it is SO good. it is truly life… and then he says – this is only the beginning. a mere stepping stone to eternity.

  2. The voice of one calling out in the wilderness.
I’ve never heard of Derek before, but to me this is a prophetic word to the church in America. We’ve gotten so hung up on what the gospell can do for us (materialy) that we fail to realize EVERYTHING has already been done. Sure – God may bless us. Sure – we may have pleasure along the way… but that IS NOT what we should be focused on.
Christ didn’t die for us to have nice houses and cars. And how many of us get mad at God and think “He doesn’t like us” because He didn’t give us what we wanted? We desire slavery to things, more than we desire freedom in Him.
Ok, sorry, was I ranting here? Whew. I feel better now.

    • Haha! No worries! Rant all you want! We gotta vent sometimes. =) Thanks for sharing. Such good stuff. Now may we press on and pursue Christ in His fullness as we seek to be His purified Bride anxiously awaiting His return!

  3. Great song and so true to what we see today. The continual decay of all that is right and good can be so discouraging but then we must remember who we belong to…. and our focus shifts to what is really right and good!

Thanks for posting such important lyrics
