Student CPx Austin 2010…

“We had our first Baptism last night. He was a gang member and has been hanging out with me and my friends”, was the text message I received from Cameron, an 18 year-old student from SCPx Austin 2010 a few days after he got home. This is one of many stories that we get to hear all throughout the year as ordinary followers of Jesus step out in faith to live out the teachings of scripture. Yes, we are training EVERY believer to Baptize new believers. Yes, we are equipping EVERY believer to make disciples, and start NEW CHURCHES. (Yes, “real” churches. YES, it is their “HOME church”-meaning they don’t ALSO go to another one. =)

There was a lot of freedom being experienced in Austin during Student CPx. Many people were, for the first time, experiencing the love of the Father, and uncovering their true identity as children of God. As this reality hit home they began realizing the most basic commands of Jesus found in scripture. When all the “extra stuff” that has been added to “being a Christian” is removed, and students begin walking in confidence in who they are in Jesus the sense of freedom becomes tangible. You can see it on their faces…

After our session on Baptism and Communion several students decided to get Baptized! So, we did what anyone would do…we went down to the river and had one of their friends Baptize them! Check it out…

Thanks Caryn Werner for taking some LEGIT pics for us!

We spent lots of time in the prayer room worshiping and praying. We encountered the Spirit in fresh new ways all week! The Holy Spirit ISN’T the “black sheep” of the trinity anymore! It’s so cool that we get to “soak” in His presence.

Part of the DNA of SCPx is creating a culture of honor everywhere we are, and everywhere we send students. One of the ways we start creating that culture during SCPx is to pray and impart blessings/prophetic words over each guest who comes to pour into us. This is the students praying over Neil who joined us from Long Beach to teach us about Church Planting Movements and Multiplying Disciples.

We met for dinner one evening at Jon & Cherie Werner’s house where we got a real taste of what “house church” might look/feel like. We worshiped, prayed, & talked about sabbath rest & communion as we celebrated the Baptisms from that day.

Overall, this is definitely a group of world changers. I am super excited to see how God uses them in their individual contexts this next semester, and for the rest of their lives. Stay tuned for more on what God is doing directly in the city of Austin as a result of SCPx. Also, feel free to watch the short slide show of pictures from Student CPx below…if you are inspired by what you see here, and want to sow into what God is doing through Intentional Gatherings and Student CPx then CLICK HERE to give.

Student Church Planting Manual…

This is an incredible resource for anyone who has a desire to make disciples, and allow for new churches to birth from the harvest on their campus. It’s also great for those who have a desire to mobilize others, lead, and resource them to do so in their context. We use much of this stuff in our Student CPx Training (Of course, nothing beats the real-deal experiences from actually being a part of one of these hands on trainings) and know of others all over the world who have gotten a hold of it, applied many of the principles, and seen some incredible things happen for the kingdom.

It is a bit long, but feel free to download, save, print, copy, distribute, etc. as much as you like. Our heart is to see this information get into the hands of anyone and everyone who has a heart to see ordinary followers of Christ released to live out the teachings of the Scriptures. Enjoy!

Jesus Healing People in Streets at SCPx Pitt!

From a post by Erik Fish:

The Pittsburgh University football player took off his sling and began swinging his arm around. “I couldn’t move it like this before!” Tears filled his eyes. “What’s happening?”

“Jesus loves you,” was the reply he heard.

Other football players began lining up, presenting their various injuries; a glint of faith was beginning to spark in their eyes toward Jesus. “Will you pray for me, too?”

The students began praying. As they did, they told them about Jesus and why they were out in the streets meeting people. Whether they experienced healing or not, they each encountered His love.

A woman walks by right then and asks, “What’s going on here?”

“These people are praying for people and healing them,” a football player informed her.

“Will you pray for me? I’m on my way to the hospital. I just recently had brain surgery. I woke up this morning and I can’t move my arm.”

She walked home, no longer in need of a hospital visit.

This was just one story from the Student CPx in Pittsburgh, PA last week.

The story above might sound crazy. Perhaps it’s a bit outside the norm of many of our Christian experiences. But it’s true. These things are happening. Crazy things happened in the Bible. They can happen today. Why do some people get healed when we pray and other times they don’t? I don’t know. Jesus just told us to heal the sick and live by faith. There’s a lot of mystery in following Him.

Students are simply taking Jesus’ commands and trying to follow Him. They lead people to Jesus – six people accepted Christ from the streets of Pittsburgh during Student CPx. New believers were baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit. Simple churches are starting on campuses.

This is a student movement we’re witnessing. When students are sent to represent Jesus among the lost and broken, He likes to go with them. That’s the heart of Student CPx: to release the potential in students to change the world.

I can’t say the fruit is just the quality of the SCPx training. It’s not just the hype that a well-implemented advertising and promotion plan produces (ours isn’t that great, anyway). These students love Jesus. They’re bringing that love to lost people everywhere they go. I’m amazed at the students Jesus is raising up.

Summer Is Here!

…And you know what that means…things start to get a little crazy around here for us, and our partnering organizations as we come together to put on Student CPx trainings in 4 cities! That’s right, we have SCPx opportunities this summer in San Diego, CA. Austin, Tx. Phoenix, AZ. & Pittsburgh, PA. Intentional Gatherings is responsible for hosting two of these four (San Diego, and Austin). If you, or anyone you know is interested in some incredible cross cultural disciple making/church planting training then SCPx is a MUST!

“Student CPx will be a potent force on the university campus. This endeavor merits our prayers and support!”

– George Patterson, PhD, author of Church Multiplication Guide

“The hottest mission field in the Western world right now is the college campus. If this is an indication of what is to come, we will see another Great Awakening. Everyone should be praying for this emerging movement to spill over into all the domains of society. Come join the party.”

1040 Documentary Screening…

1040 is an explosive documentary that focuses on the rapid changes in Asia and the significant shift of spiritual landscape in the area known as the “10/40 Window”- the regions between 10 degrees and 40 degrees North Latitude on the eastern hemisphere. My friend Jaeson Ma went on a  journey through the Asian countries in the window, showing the dramatic changes happening on the ground…

Jaeson & his team will be here in Austin on Thursday evening to host a screening on UT’s campus. I hope you will all join us if you are in the Austin area as we focus not only on expanding the kingdom in Austin, but the Nations. Click Here to go to the Facebook Event page for Austin and find all the details you need to know…Check out the 1040 Movie website (link above) for more information & the full story behind the movie. If you are not in the Austin area, but would like to host a screening in your own city CLICK HERE to get in contact with the 1040 movie team. The team will be finishing up their 9 city Spring Tour very soon, but I am fairly certain there will be many more opportunities in the near future. Check out the 1040 Movie trailer below…

Fruit.

Back in August we hosted a Student CPx Training in Austin. Since that training we have seen God use the students who “graduated” from SCPx to do some incredible things for His Kingdom. From praying healing over broken bones to Baptizing new believers into new student-led churches these students are really “doin’ the stuff”! Morgan and I have the privilege of walking alongside of these students in discipleship relationships now that we live here in Austin. It is so incredible to watch God use them as they obey His voice. Four students got Baptized by other students this past Friday. Another student who had just come to Christ last week was also Baptized by her discipler in the bath tub in her apartment the Thursday night before these Baptisms…People’s lives are being transformed, and it is happening at the hands of ordinary followers of Christ – these are not religious professionals, church/campus staff members, or people who get paid to do the works of ministry. These are broke students who have been wrecked by the Gospel, and can’t help but introduce others to their king…

The kingdom of God is expanding…that is, new believers are being transformed by the Gospel as they encounter ordinary people who have been transformed by the Gospel. Last night 12 people came over to our house to talk about and discuss desires and passions God has placed in each of their hearts. The stories revolved around starting community discipleship houses in the city that would lead to a network of house churches. We got to share with them a bit of our story with IG in Ft. Worth, then Vegas, and now here. We were all equally edified, and can’t wait to see what God does. We had a powerful time of communion together as well.

God is moving in Austin in some powerful ways. We are loving every second of it. From events in our apartment complex pursuing community to discipling students one on one we are easing into a beautiful rhythm of life here in Austin. Stay tuned…

Austin+IG+Snow=adventure

The Snow family is finally settled in Austin! As many of you know this is the third city for IG to extend to through long-term, physical presence. While here we have a two-fold purpose on local level:

1) To make new disciples in our apartment community, and watch as the Holy Spirit births a new faith community (Simple Church) right out of the harvest!

2) To continue mentoring, discipling, and pouring into the students here in Austin who went through Student CPx back in August. They are continually seeing God move in powerful ways as they seek to make disciples & birth new faith communities on campus at UT. We’ve already had a chance to re-connect with them and begin discussing what this relationship will look like…

Of course, we will continue pursuing everything that God is doing through IG on a national level as well…

At our National Gathering of Student Church Planter’s in St. Louis in January…

Where we saw a student Baptize another student in the hotel pool!

This is a busy time for us as a family, and IG as an organization. Along with the SCPx National Elder team we are doing “iSCPx” in 13 cities nation-wide in the Spring. I have already been to San Diego, Los Angeles, & am in Orlando right now.

(Brain Orme, Aaron Snow, & Brad Mckoy in San Diego for iSPCx)

(The Orme’s – part of the team in SD where we’re hosting a SCPx this summer!)

We’ll host one more “iSCPx” in Austin next weekend to conclude our 4 cities. (The rest of the team will cover the other cities). This is an exciting time for our organization as God is building His Church in fresh/new ways. We are blessed to be a part of it, and grateful for those of you who support us on this journey.

A Moment To Breath…

…Is what I would like, but not something that seems like it will happen-for a few more weeks at least. We have gotten somewhat settled in Austin, but have been going non-stop the entire time. I have wanted to blog so much, but just have not had time. I leave tomorrow morning for SoCal, then return to leave for DFW the next day, home for a week for “Verge” (In Austin), then off to Orlando, FL. (See what I mean?) I did want to post an update about some exciting things coming up:

“iSCPx” (Intro to Student Church Planting Experience) will be held in about 13 cities all over the country between now and March 2010. Brad McKoy from the Student Church National Elder team as well as myself will be in San Diego and Los Angeles this weekend to host the first “iSCPx’s” on the USCD & UCLA campuses. I am also responsible for Orlando, FL. (along with our local contact and friends, Thomas & Lian Day), and Austin, Tx. Here’s some more info. about “iSCPx”:

Imagine a geographic area so strategic, in one square mile you can influence the nations.  Imagine a place where the future leaders of the world live together in temporary communities, open to new spiritual realities and worldviews.  It’s a reality – the university campus.

Now imagine 2,600 university campuses across the U.S.

Now imagine millions of students gathered on universities across the world.

If we reach the campus, we will change the world.

How can we reach these strategic training centers of the world with limited staff and budgets, not to mention declining overall Christian population from year to year on most college campuses?

What if students could do all the works of ministry? What if, — instead of planning a weekly meeting – campus ministry staff could mobilize and mentor students to start 25-50 simple churches across their campus?

A shift has begun across several campuses in the last few years. Churches and ministries have begun sending out students to make disciples on their campus. The result has been a growing movement of student-led churches.

Students preach the gospel and make disciples. They hold 24-hour prayer vigils for the nations. They baptize other students. They pray for the sick. They branch out to unreached people groups and start simple, reproducible churches in dorms, apartments, and fraternities – any area students do life together.

We see college campuses as small nations, composed of multiple unreached people groups. Together with mission agencies and a growing network of friends across the world, we are working to mobilize a student led church planting movement that will influence every university in the world to reach the nations for Christ.

iSCPx is a four hour seminar that will introduce you to the movement.

You’ll be invited to help mobilize student churches on your campus this year.

Does your heart beat for the nations, yet you feel called to the college campus? You are not alone!

Learn the History.

Catch the Vision.

Join the Movement.

National Church…?

As has been the case with many of you, God has totally been wrecking all of the preconceived thoughts I’ve had about what His Church is, and what He desires it to be. The things we have seen happen in the past 3 years of our lives, and the life of Intentional Gatherings have been incredible. From serving the poor to community discipleship houses, and training others across the nation to make disciples & plant new churches we can only assume God has something big in store…
Through Student CPx we, along with the help of several other organizations, have seen hundreds of students trained to make disciples and plant LAY-led faith communities in their context as new believers encounter Jesus. After the students are trained we pair them up with a “seasoned practitioner” to mentor & disciple them. We have elders and leaders spread out in different regions of the country to help shepherd and pastor these apostolic missionaries…

This past weekend in St. Louis we gathered together (with those who could make it) many of these disciple makers/church planters for a time of celebration of what God has done, and edifying one another before going back out into the harvest. As the national elder team and I were chatting we realized something really neat…we have a Nationwide Church of Churches on our hands! There are hubs where traveling teams can be sent out from, and return to for rejuvenation. Not to mention the many Baptisms and hundreds of powerful stories of God moving on campuses & in neighborhoods.
Realizing what God is doing has, once again, completely shifted how I view His Church. I can’t help but think about the early Church in the New Testament, and how it must have been spread out all over the region with thousands of believers, elders, traveling apostolic leaders, BRAND new believers, and many individual church communities spread out all over the place. I’m learning that God grows & builds His church in many ways when we LET HIM. When we get our of His way & remove Him from the box we put Him in He can really amaze us. There really are ways for “growth” outside of how many people gather at a weekly service! (Imagine that! =) It brought a smile to my face, and much peace to my soul to look and see what God has built in the past couple of years – we are humbled and blessed to be a part of it…

If you look closely at the picture you’ll notice FOUR generations present. By the grace of God we have Spiritual grandparents all the way down to small children and infants who are a part of our growing national spiritual family!
